Most brides have never hired a DJ in their life and are not quite sure what all a DJ can do for them. Here are a few things to consider to help you decide if a DJ is right for you.

1. DJ vs. Live Music – Live music can be a great option for some brides, but there can be some advantages to hiring a DJ. For example, DJ’s will play music as performed by the original artist. There is truly something special about dancing to the song that made you fall in love rather than an imitation. And, as we continue, you’ll find many other roles a DJ will play.

2. Music Selection – Any DJ you go with should have a large selection of music that will please many different tastes. Remember, your guests will probably range in age from the very young to the “still young at heart” grandparents. A great DJ will be able to find music to span the generations. If you prefer, you DJ can take requests from your guests. What type of music do you want played at your wedding? And, maybe just as important, what music do you not want played at your wedding?

3. Dancing and Entertainment – Some brides prefer to have soft dinner music playing in the background which can make for a very lovely event. Other brides prefer to have their guests on their feet, dancing and having a great time. Whichever style of entertainment you prefer, your DJ will accommodate. So the question is, would you prefer soft dinner music, or a hoppin’ dance floor?

4. Activities and Guest Involvement – There are several popular dances specifically for weddings such The Marriage Countdown where the last couple standing will be the couple who has been married the longest. Then there is a bride and groom favorite: The Money Dance, a fun way to gather a few dollars in donations.

5. Lighting – DJ’s can provide fun lighting that will enhance your event. Do you want a mirror ball reflecting lights across the dance floor as you take your grooms hand in the first dance? Do you want a spot light on the best man as he toasts to your future? There can also be fun colored lights that add excitement to the dance floor. These lighting options should already be included with your DJ package, which is always a bonus!

6. Consultations – DJ’s understand that there is a lot of planning involved with your wedding. We don’t want you to miss anything on your special day. Most companies will provide consultations which will help you plan out the details of your wedding entertainment. The DJ should also double check with you a few days before the wedding to make sure there’s nothing missed.

7. Your Itinerary – A DJ will be a key component in keeping your wedding on track and on a timely schedule. It will be a long day and by the end of the wedding, you’ll likely be tired and ready to start the honeymoon. It’s nice to have a DJ help keep all the events of your wedding in line and on time. They should also be able to work with your photographer and videographer to make sure no special moments are missed.

8. Master of Ceremonies – An important role that a DJ can perform is being the MC at your wedding. They can announce the wedding party and the grand entrance of the bride and groom. They can make other announcements as you desire from the first dance to the cake cutting to the bouquet toss. This will help keep your guests informed and they will be inclined to stay longer.

9. Cost & Contract – The cost of a DJ comes near the end of this list because of how affordable they can be. Modern Bride Magazine reported that entertainment will only take 4% - 8% of your total wedding budget and your guests will remember the entertainment more than anything else (next to the glowing bride and her gorgeous dress of course!) Be sure to get a proper contract. This will cover both the DJ and your responsibilities and outline all fees involved. You don’t want any surprise fees on your wedding day!

10. Peace of Mind – You can rest assured that your wedding is in good hands with a well trained DJ. Providing not only the music but helping keep things on track, making announcements, and keeping your guests entertained will be a large load off your back. A DJ should be there to make things easier so that you can enjoy your day and make lasting memories.
