I will love you faithfully through the best and the worst, through the difficult and the easy. What may come, I will always be there for you as your partner, lover, and best friend. As I have given you my hand to hold, so I give you my life to keep.”

Above are typical vows a bride takes on her wedding day. Without someone to officiate the wedding ceremony, the wedding is not legal. No matter how many flowers, how beautifully the cake is decorated, how impeccable the wedding line appears—accented in the most fashionable colors, or how delightful the bride and groom are—without an officiator, there simply is no wedding. It is the most important aspect of the event. It’s imperative to choose the right person to officiate the wedding ceremony.

The officiator needs to match the couple’s beliefs and personalities, plus be willing to work with the couple to create a ceremony that will be meaningful to the couple and touch all those present who are there to witness the wedding ceremony. I believe it’s a very nice gesture to include the mothers’ in the ceremony, if of course, it’s also important to the bride and groom, depending on family circumstances. Mothers love to be involved. They do so much to raise their children, so it’s an honor for them to have a small, yet important role in the actual ceremony. My weddings have a ceremony where the mothers give their children a candle or a rose, which allows them to “give their children away” and show their love and support for their decision to get married by also giving their children a hug and having the opportunity to privately express their love and support during a candle or a rose ceremony. It is memorable for everyone!
I admonish each and every bride to give careful consideration in choosing an officiator for your wedding day. Find someone who is passionate about performing weddings and someone very dependable, so that you can rest assured that your wedding will be one of the most memorable events in your lifetime.
