In addition to doing bridal makeup for private clients, Anna K Findlay of Anna K Style (www.annakstyle.com) has been a professional hair and makeup stylist for television, feature film, and theater for the past eight years. She is on the cutting edge of makeup technique and has some advice for brides on their big day.
“I feel that makeup should make the scene but not be seen. Makeup does its job best when it enhances your natural beauty without calling attention to itself. You want to be the best you that can be, but you don’t want to look painted,” says Anna K. Because it is a special day, brides can sometimes make the mistake of wearing more makeup than they normally would. She suggests that what is actually needed is a different kind of makeup.

“Remember, you’re going to be photographed,” Anna K says. “Cameras today pick up things in makeup the casual observer might not – so there are some special techniques and technology borrowed from Hollywood that we use to make our brides ‘pop’ while still looking natural.”
One of those important techniques is airbrushing. Developed initially in response to higher-resolution film stocks and high-definition television cameras, airbrushing applies an extremely thin layer of color, allowing for a whole range of subtle effects that simply can’t be obtained with traditional makeup application. Airbrushing requires special equipment and a skilled professional, but the advantages are many, Anna K explains.
“Airbrushing goes on as a very fine mist of dots, so it allows your skin to breath and it doesn’t run when you cry or sweat,” says Anna K. “Also, because it goes on so thinly and evenly, there is simply no need to use foundation, so there’s never any streaking, clumping or accentuation of wrinkles.” Airbrushing is never shiny and it lasts a full eight hours without the need for retouching – except for lipstick. All that kissing takes it toll!
