We’ve got the latest and greatest!

Things change. And we’re glad. Every year something new sparks, a trend hits and rules change. Here’s some advice from those who know best on what’s new and improved in the wedding industry—and in modesty.

Night Engagement Shoot
One hot new trend is the night engagement shoot, which I usually do in tandem with day shoots. We typically shoot about an hour before sunset for perfect warm-golden light, and then as the sun sets I treat the couple to dinner in downtown Salt Lake while the city lights come out to play. Night shots are unique because they allow for really moody lighting and creative techniques that aren’t available in the day. In addition, spending more time with the couple as a photographer helps us build a strong and comfortable relationship that translates into the photos.

Bring In Your Own Catering
Are you on a tight budget but want a reception center? Look for a venue that will allow you to bring in your own catering. Food is a major portion of your wedding reception costs, and a reception center that will allow you to cater the event yourself will save you a substantial sum of money. These types of venues will usually offer buffet rental items and ideas to make your buffet display look professional, so you don’t have to worry about cutting style to save on cost.

Custom Portrait With Meaning
One of our favorite new trends in displaying beautiful photography is to personalize it by adding a poem, phrase or favorite line from “your” song to a custom designed wall portrait and make it completely unique.

One of my favorite custom designed portraits was done for the father of the bride. We included a shot of the bride kissing her dad on the cheek, the father/daughter dance and her dad’s favorite bridal shot of her. We used a line from a song that had special meaning for them and was the same song they had danced to during the reception. It was such a touching and meaningful gift that would bring back a flood of happy memories for her dad. And we all know how hard it is for dads to let their little girls go!

You can do just about any type of grouping you can think of—engagement, bridal or wedding photos—and add your personalized message to create a wonderful gift of art for someone you love!

The Bridal Headband
The latest in bridal accessories brings a fashionable headband replacing the tiara of yesterday. These headbands have double-faced satin ribbon woven through and many are garnished with side accents. It’s a beautiful new trend.

Upside-Down Approach
Timing is everything, especially when you’re planning a wedding. And booking times for the temple, the luncheon location and the reception site can be a hassle. So let’s look at it from an upside-down approach. Start by deciding when you want to leave your reception. Once you have this figured out, book a reception center for either an evening or afternoon. Great centers are hard to get into, so you may need to be flexible on dates to get that special place. Keep in mind that weekday receptions are better attended than weekends, especially in the summer months.

Next, determine how much time you need between your luncheon and your reception for travel, photos and other things you want to do during the day. Book your luncheon venue around that schedule.

Believe it or not, sealing times are easier to schedule and change than reception and luncheon sites, so book the temple last. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three hours between the start times of your sealing and the luncheon. Many luncheon venues won’t book an event after 1:00 PM, so keep that in mind as you plan the schedule of your day.

By carefully organizing the events of your day, you can cut down on the stress level of coordinating venues and of planning your whole wedding!

Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Take your bridal pictures with your fiancé about a month before your wedding day. That way you will have plenty of time for the photographer to take more “artistic” shots of the two of you on your wedding day. You will also have fabulous pictures to display at your luncheon and reception. And you won’t feel stressed to give all your time to your photographer on your wedding day—you will be able to focus more on your husband, family and guests.

Don’t freak out about the traditional “my husband can’t see me in my wedding dress before the wedding day” myth. It’s just that: A MYTH! It’s foolish to try and cram everything into your special day. If you have the opportunity to spread some of your activities out over time DO IT. If your photographer is good, they will naturally make it special for the both of you the first time he sees you in your dress. I am so happy we did this.

Bridal Bouquet for Bridals
For your bridal photos, it’s a good idea to have your florist make you a bridal bouquet. With a full-color grouping of flowers rather than a toned-down bouquet, your photos will turn out more fun and colorful. With this pre-wedding arrangement for your bridal photos, you can also see what your bouquet will look like before the wedding, in case you’d like to make any changes.

Jeweled Bouquet
Many bridal bouquets now feature faux jewelry among the blossoms, adding spectacular sparkle to your design. If you’re helping the bride put together the big celebration, why not make her day more memorable by adding a custom piece of jewelry to her bouquet? A pearl pendant, sapphires or other stones can be custom-made into a memorable necklace, earrings or bracelet that will always remind her of her wedding. And don’t forget the groom: add a pearl or other stone that can become a tie tack or cuff links to give him a useful and elegant remembrance of that special day for him and his bride.
