TAYLORSVILLE — There wasn’t much notice when Taylorsville resident Jackie, whose last name will not be used, heard her son tell her his wedding was off. She had about 30 hours to bring all their preparations to a halt.
“The bride and groom [were] together Wednesday night, before the Friday morning wedding, and just came in and said it was off,” Jackie says.
By that time, it was too late for the families to get their deposits back from the florist, the photographer and everyone else who planned to be there.
Jackie doesn’t know exactly how much money the bride’s family lost, but she knows it was a big financial hit.
“It was a lot of money, into the thousands,” she says.
So, what can couples do to prevent a situation like Jackie’s family experienced? Robin Saville, with the Utah Commission on Marriage, says too few couples are really discussing important things before the nuptials.

Yes, it is that time of year… when Bridal Shows are abundant. How do you get ready for them?
Plan a time to go. Often, vendors are not quite as busy at the very start of the show, which may allow you more time to ask questions and visit with them.
You will be filling out your name and information many times over… be ready with some labels with your information already on them… small mailing labels work great. Include the following:
Bride’s full name
Groom’s full name
Wedding date
Wedding budget
Email address
Phone number
These are the basics, but it will save you a lot of time and hand-cramps!!!
If you know what you are looking for, go to those vendors first, whether it is a particular vendor, or a type of category, such as videographers.
If you are not sure what you are looking for, make sure to keep an open mind to new ideas, that can help you achieve the wedding you want.
Make sure to ask questions, and get information so that you can make sound decisions.
Bring someone along with you… a mother, a sister, a friend, the groom… etc… It is always great to have someone else to help bounce ideas off of. They may catch something that you don’t.
If you are looking for a dress, make sure to not miss out on the fashion shows. Styles change every 6 months or so.
Be prepared to come away with lots of information, packets, handouts, DVDs, business cards… Help keep your planning organized and sift through everything when you get back home and place everything in one binder or folder so that you are not searching for everything.

A new kind of theft has emerged that you should know about.
Wedding crashers who come and steal money envelopes from the gift table. They come dressed for your wedding, they mingle, they eat, then they casually walk over to place an envelope in the designated location at the gift table. Or at least so it would seem. Instead they use a coat to cover the envelopes and grab them up while no one is looking, and leave the reception. With so many people coming and going and visiting on such a happy occasion, there are enough distractions that one would not suspect a theft right under our noses. Read more…
