We all have one. Somewhere in a scrapbook or under a pile in a box is a narrow strip of four pictures, probably black and white, bursting with familiar faces and funny smiles. The joy and spontaneity of a moment frozen in time thanks to four quarters and a cramped photobooth. They can’t help but bring a smile. These photobooth pictures are reminiscences of the past, but they are also waves of the future. Couples are now bringing that same whimsical fun to their wedding days by renting photobooths for their receptions, a popular trend that has finally reached Utah.
These are not your parents’ photobooths, however. The metal walls and musty curtains have been replaced by stylish construction and elegant draperies; the chemical processing has been supplanted by digital technology; and the wait-time has been reduced to almost nothing. The fun, though, is exactly what it’s always been – contagious! The concept is simple and familiar, but the innovations are brilliant. Guests gather inside the booth and, using an LCD monitor mounted below the camera, center themselves and check their poses. Some photobooth companies also supply props like hats, shades, and other accessories to help inspire guest creativity. The booth takes a series of photos previewed on the monitor. The photos are then printed and deposited into a slot and are also saved in a gallery that can be burned to a CD or accessed online. Once the first few pictures start circulating, guests will be enthusiastically streaming in and out of the booth in a steady flow of smiles and laughter reflective of their joy in your special day. These photo strips can be personalized with the couple’s names and wedding date or any kind of message making the perfect wedding favor that people will actually want to keep, as opposed to the “today-I-marry-my-friend” poem rolled into a scroll. Since the photobooth can print duplicate photos, some couples supply mini photo albums to their guests so that they can swap pictures with others. Others have guests put one copy into a guest book and sign their best wishes next to it instead of using a traditional guest book. The possibilities are endless.
Jesse and Danielle Rich decided to include a photobooth in their wedding plans this past April. “We both have fun-loving personalities, and we wanted our guests to have a great time,” says Danielle. “The photobooth added to the fun spirit of the reception, and it gave our guests something enjoyable to do instead of just sitting at the tables. Jesse and I were actually really sad that we had to stand in the receiving line instead of playing at the booth with everyone.” What is the best part about the photobooth? “Looking at the pictures in the gallery of all these people we know and seeing their personalities come out,” says Danielle. “You see a whole new side of your guests. I look at those pictures all the time.” The Rich’s guests were enthusiastic about the photobooth as well. “Everyone thought it was a fun idea and loved that they could take the pictures home with them.” Danielle adds, “It was great to see how much fun people can have at a reception. Who doesn’t love a photobooth?”
